Dana Point Harbor West Basin Update ~ New Parking Lot Gates, Restroom, and Laundry Facilities Electronic Access (NEW)!
Dana West Marina is in the process of installing an electronic access system for all Dana West Marina cove side parking lots, restrooms, and laundry rooms. Installation of the system has begun, and it is anticipated that the entire installation will be completed by February 14, 2012. There will be a short period where the system will be tested and we plan to be fully operational by March 1, 2012.

BOAT US GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS: Will your GPS work when you need it? ACT NOW!
Earlier this year, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) gave conditional approval to a private company, LightSquared, to begin a nationwide broadband service right next to the radio spectrum used for GPS. After concerns from user groups (including BoatU.S.) the FCC required significant testing and a report for potential conflicts with aviation, cellular, navigation, and four other GPS uses before this proposal could move forward. In that June 30th report the navigation sub-team concluded “that all phases of the LightSquared deployment plan will result in widespread harmful interference to GPS signals and service and that mitigation is not possible.”

Mariners are encouraged to take this survey to assist the IHO in improving charting products.

Help Fight Unwarranted Bans on Lead Fishing Tackle ~ Support the Hunting, Fishing and Recreational Shooting Sports Protection Act. Over the past decade, efforts have increased to eliminate the sale and use of lead fishing tackle, including sinkers, jigs and other widely used tackle. Last November anglers like you helped to defeat the most recent attempt to ban lead tackle nationwide when the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) denied a petition to ban lead fishing tackle under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).
Dana Point Flotilla 06-08 of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary offers seminars to help boaters review skills or learn new ones. Taught by qualified instructors, these seminars pack lots of information into two hours of your time—and for a reasonable price. The seminars meet at the Dana West Yacht Club. Each seminar costs $25, or take both for only $40. Materials are included. To register contact Art Ambrose, flotilla staff officer for public education: fso-pe@uscgaux-danapoint.org.

The Possessory Interest Tax is a tax on the value of your use of public property; in this case your slip, the marina parking lot, etc. The Personal Property Tax is a tax on the value of your boat. Each tax is assessed separately and may be appealed. If appealed, the appeals must be done separately. The steps below explain the 2010 individual appeal process.

Your DPBA leadership team is spearheading several different groups meeting on boater issues right now. Here we are providing updates on two of these groups, the Parking Task Force and The Slip Fees Market Study. Please do contact us if you have questions, concerns or wish to volunteer to participate. As we've said many times, democracy is a slow, painful process. But it does work pretty well when all stakeholders are properly represented and when those being represented take the time to be well informed and step forward from time to time to contribute with their time and ideas.

DANA POINT CITY COUNCIL HEARING, ADOPTION OF AMENDED CCC DANA POINT HARBOR LCPA -- Rodger Beard, president of Dana Point Boaters Association, spoke in favor of approval of the amendment, but reminded the council that they would be charged with enforcing the LCPA, a Coastal Commission document.
