Dana Point Boaters Association

About The Dana Point Boaters Association

Vision:
The Dana Point Boaters Association is the champion of recreational boating and the jewel that is Dana Point Harbor.

Mission:
The Dana Point Boaters Association advocates the preservation, enhancement, and expansion of affordable recreational boating. We work to improve the family friendly atmosphere and breadth of water-oriented activities we all enjoy in the harbor.  We serve as the watchdog by ethically protecting the rights of all boaters and representing them when collective action is most effective.  We actively gather information and communicate our views to educate boaters, external interests, and public officials.  We build and maintain constructive, working relationships to achieve common goals with other harbor stakeholders.  We will pass on our harbor to the next generation of recreational boaters in better condition than it is today.

VVMOST Objectives:
The Dana Point Boaters Association conducted a two day VVMOST (Values, Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategies, and Tactics) Long Range Plan Seminar for the Association.  These Sessions were conducted and moderated by DPBA member, Jim Montrella.  Jim has worked for years representing and moderating other organizations and groups thru the VVMOST Planning Process.  The DPBA is proceeding with all parts of this Long Range Planning Process, Objectives is just one of the steps along our way.  During this Long Range Planning, your association, along with harbor merchants and fellow boaters were able to complete many of the steps.  This Long Range Planning will move your Association closer to completing these steps towards our Values, Vision, Mission, Objectives, Strategies, and Tactics, today, and the years to come.  During these two days we completed several of the steps with one of them being our "Objectives".  To view our Objectives please Click Here.  The Association and its Members are moving forward and looking ahead beyond today and the many years ahead for the jewel that is Dana Point Harbor.

The Association:
The Dana Point Boaters Association is a California Not-For-Profit IRC §501(c)(4) Corporation.   The Association intends to be a permanent organization/association within Dana Point Harbor now and in the years to come.

While the Association focuses on many issues presented to recreational boaters in Dana Point Harbor, one of the more significant efforts will be what the County of Orange refers to as the "Dana Point Harbor Revitalization Plan".  The Association’s membership are boaters & non-boaters who are interested in and committed to helping promote, develop, and implement the best Dana Point Harbor Revitalization Plan.  This is accomplished by working with OC Dana Point Harbor, City of Dana Point, Department of Boating and Waterways, South Coast Water District, California Coastal Commission and other agencies.  It is our mission to involve all boaters and make sure our needs, wants, and ideas are heard and acted on. Together we can have a positive impact going forward for the next 50 years.

The Association hosts meetings and different safety and educational venues for its members. To control costs, leverage each others skills, react quickly, solicit feedback, collect ideas and keep everyone informed we utilize a number of different electronic tools.  In addition to our website, which you have already discovered, we also send out emails. These fall into several different categories:

  1. Members Only Boaters Blast – these are emails that are intended just for our members. Typically announcing important meetings, surveys, decisions of the board and information that should remain private to the Association. You will only receive these emails if you join the Association which can be done by clicking “Join/Subscribe Here.”

  2. Boaters Blast – these are emails that are available to the general public, including elected officials, city/county/state employees, merchants, business owners, press, other associations, consultants and boaters.

The Best Way to support the Boaters Association is by joining.  You can do so by JOINING, Association Membership not only shows your support for the Association and your fellow boaters it also gives you access to information, updates, and discounts at local and national businesses.  Please consider joining, together we can make our collective voices heard and acted upon.

Joining the Save Our Harbor Blog allows anyone to pose a question, create a survey, see research done by others, and post files or links.  We encourage you to join the Save Our Harbor Blog as this increases communications which is a very important element of a community.  You can join by navigating to SaveOurHarbor.com.  If you have difficulties joining, please contact our Secretary at Secretary@DanaPointBoaters.org, and we will be happy to walk you through the process.

We are a grass roots organization and need your help to spread the word.  We are still reaching out to obtain contact information for all boaters who make use of our harbor.  This leaves us with the press, emails, public speaking opportunities and most importantly you by contacting other boaters.  You know lots of other people that love and use our “Harbor with a Park.”  Please pass along the information about our/your Association.  A little effort on your part can make a huge impact for all in our boating community.  Once you’ve joined the Association you will find links that allow you to forward our emails. Please encourage your family, friends, and contacts to join DPBA.

In closing we would like to say thank you, we know everyone is incredibly busy and will have a hard time juggling another cause and working to help it.  We understand that and this is the reason that our Association was created.  Your Board of Directors endeavors to do as much of the work as possible and to prepare things for your digestion in as little time as possible.  If you are interested in helping more than just taking the survey, joining the Association, signing up for the Boaters Blast and joining the Save Our Harbor Blog then please contact us at Officers@DanaPointBoaters.org.

We thank you for your time and your support,
DPBA Board of Directors

Alan Johnson, Director, contact Alan at: AlanJohnson@DanaPointBoaters.org
Alan has loved Dana Point since he first learned to surf at Doheny Beach in 1965. Gone are the days of surfing all day for $1.00…(75 cents for gas and 25 cents for lunch), yet what happens to the harbor and boating still matters much. He has been boating since 1968.  That is when he built his first boat, a Winard Sabot. Chaffey College Sailing Club is where he learned to crew by coastal racing an Islander 44. While raising a family he went to the “dark side” for 15 yrs having lots of fun with a 23’ Sea Ray.  The “kids” like to go fast!  Currently he maintains a trailerable sailboat in the Embarcadero, racing, day sailing, and cruising to Catalina whenever possible. Alan is married, with 4 kids, 4 grand kids, and enjoys being a Family Dentist in Mission Viejo since 1979.

Joseph Gildner, contact Joe at: JoeGildner@DanaPointBoaters.org
Joe and his wife Barb are originally from New Orleans but have been Orange County residents and in Dana Point Harbor for over twenty years.  They jointly run a claims adjusting and consulting business with Joe being a nationally known expert witness.  He holds a B. A. in Business Administration from Southeastern Louisiana University and is a C.P.C.U. and a PCLA.  They have three sons, three grandsons and one granddaughter who love the water and fishing with the family.  Other interests include golf along with building and racing Corvettes.  Joe has been a boat owner for over forty years and affordable access to the water and fair treatment by government is one of his major concerns.  He believes that the harbor was built for boats and their owners are the harbors customers and should be treated as such.  He will do everything in his power to see that all interests are protected in a fair, reasonable and legal manner.
